Obituary for Carrie Lyn Weinstein

Carrie Lyn Weinstein, born in White Plains, NY, lost her battle with cancer on March 30, 2023 at the age of 54. During her early life, Carrie lived with her family in Ridgewood, NJ, and attended the Forum School in Waldwick and special classes in Fair Lawn. As a young adult she moved to Hunterdon Developmental Center in Clinton. For the past 18 years, she resided with ALFA Development (Appropriate Living for Adult Autistic) in West Milford, where she spent her days in a sheltered workshop. For the past year she lived with her mother and stepfather in Fair Lawn. Carrie made few demands and offered almost no complaints, even as she suffered with the discomforts and indignities of her terminal disease. She thrilled with visits to the shore, boating, swimming, going to restaurants, spending holidays with family, especially Christmas, music and her cherished slinky. That Carrie relied on others was, in part, a gift that helped people around her open themselves and grow with a spirit of unconditional generosity. She often surprised those same people with her quirky personality and, despite neurological damage, the subtlety and complexity of her mind. There was hardly anything a person could say to Carrie that she did not understand. She could be devious and had an earthy and surprising sense of humor. That a doctor in her infancy recommended institutionally warehousing Carrie speaks volumes about the limits of medical understanding. Carrie was a constant reminder of how much remains unknown about the mind. Carrie, beloved daughter, sister and aunt, was predeceased by her father William Weinstein, and is survived by her mother Diane D. Hiller, stepfather George H. Hiller, brother Andrew Weinstein, his wife Ruth Liberman, sister Liana Kaminsky, her husband Dave Kaminsky, niece and nephew Maya and Ari Weinstein and stepbrother Eric Hiller. Carrie will be deeply missed and forever loved. Memorial donations in her memory may be made to ALFA Development, 39 Oak Ridge Road, New Foundland, NJ 07435. Arrangements are by the Vander Plaat Colonial Home in Fair Lawn.
