Obituary for Charles J. Capouet

Charles “Charlie” Capouet, a true patriot, devout catholic, and longtime resident of Elmwood Park passed away peacefully at the age of 105 years old, on Sunday September 25, 2022.

Charles was born and raised in New York City in 1917. He graduated from the Mother Cabrini School and Coopers Union in NYC. From 1941 to 1951, Charles served honorably in the United States Navy alongside his twin brother, Harry, in World War II and the Korean War. While he served on many ships during WWII, his service during the Korean War was most notably spent on the USS Yellowstone. He was a designer for Corbo Jewelers and employed by Prudential Insurance as a lithographer. As a musician, Charlie loved to sing acapella in barber shop quartets and large choirs as well as serenade at weddings and family parties.

Charlie has lived a legacy of faith and service as a devoted Catholic and an active parishioner for over 70 years at the Shrine of St. Jude/Our Lady of Victories Church of Paterson and St. Anne’s Church of Fair Lawn. Charles was a dedicated usher and organizer of the monthly Nocturnal Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. In addition, he was also named Minister of Hospitality at St. Anne’s Church, a title he cherished and put into practice quite often as he was always the life of the party. Charlie was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Catholic War Veterans, and the Holy Name Society as past president for 17 years. Many years ago, Charles and his wife, Dorothy, organized a drive with the support of the Holy Name Society and collected over 10,000 rosary beads sent to Medina, Brazil for their conversation as devoted members of the Catholic Church.
On his 105th birthday, the Elmwood Park Mayor, Robert Colletti, the police department, the fire department and the EMT services honored his special day at his home. Charlie enjoyed a lifetime of swimming, sailing his boat. After his 100th birthday, he wrote a book based on a story he shared with his children while growing up and a tribute to each of his great-grandchildren’s developing attributes. He adored his family and spent countless time drawing cartoons and storytelling. Charlie created, designed, and produced, “Capt. Star’s Whirlaways, a spectacular wind toy,” that was launched from kites and balloons. Charles was very active throughout his lifetime and even well past 100 years old. Many people have asked him what his secret to a long life is; his response was, “Well, it’s not the water!”

Charlie is predeceased by his loving wife of 63 years, Dorothy (nee McCrossen) who died on October 21, 2011, his dearly missed grandson, Sean Sullivan of Wayne who died June 13, 2016, and his twin brother, Harry.
Devoted father of Charles Capouet, Jr. and his wife Joan of Fair Lawn, Marguerite Sullivan, her husband John, Elizabeth Blundetto, her husband John, and Bernadette Antonellis. Proud grandfather of 10 grandchildren; Charles C. Capouet (Mina), Nicole Capouet (Juan), Sean Sullivan, Danielle Quinn (Nicholas), John Blundetto (Lindsey), Jennifer Smith (Matthew), Anthony Blundetto (Julie), Brittany Antonellis (Frank), Peter C.
