Obituary for Edward J. Hughes

Edward J. Hughes (Tipper), a longtime resident of Fair Lawn, NJ, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, January 28, 2023, at the age of 82. Before retiring Ed (Tipper) had been a CPA and CFO for several corporations. He was an active parishioner of St. Anne’s Parish in Fair Lawn for 45 years.

Our Dad was born in the Bronx to Tom and Mabel Hughes. He was one of 8 children, 6 great brothers and one wonderful sister, Tom, Dick, Dad, Monica, Stephen, Jimmy, Charlie and Johnny. It was through his large Irish Catholic family that he learned the love of family and friends, and he carried that love and energy, and shared it with others wherever he went.

Dad was a graduate of All Hallows High School (Class of 1958) and a graduate of Fordham University (Class of 1962).

He and Mom are a beautiful and rare love story. They were Junior High School sweethearts and have loved each other and been best friends ever since. There was no question when they met that they would spend the rest of their lives together, and as soon as Dad graduated from Fordham University, he and Mom were wed on October 13, 1962.

Together they raised 4 children, Jean, Ted, Tom and Christine, and it was from their love and strong faith that they taught their children about the importance of Love of Family and Faith. From that love came 11 wonderful grandchildren that they both loved spending time with. His large extended family had 30 nieces and nephews who adored their “Uncle Tipper,” and he loved them all right back.

Dad loved to say (with a smile and a twinkle in his eye), “It’s not easy having fun all the time!!” But he made it look easy. He loved life and he loved having fun with his large family and friends. He and mom had a great group of friends from his Fordham days, and over the years they took lots of wonderful trips together. They moved to Fair Lawn in 1967, joined St. Anne’s Church and quickly made friendships in town that would last a lifetime and there was an incredible amount of craziness and laughter and good times made!

Dad had a very successful career, starting out as a CPA at Arthur Young, and earning his way to multiple CFO positions, including CFO of Coca-Cola Bottling Company, but that is not what he would want to be remembered for. He will be remembered for his down to earth authenticity, for his enduring and deep love of his wife Jane, for his love of his children and grandchildren, for how he let his faith guide him, for being the trusted “go-to guy” in our family for just about everything and anything, for being a founding father of the Hughes’ Annual Cousin’s Picnic –which is still running more than 40 years, later, for his love of all things Irish, for all of the good times he had with so many at their Poconos home, for 24 years of tailgates at Giant games, for all of his Fair Lawn hijinks fun, for his calm common sense and practicality, and he will be remembered by scores of family and friends whom he cherished and loved so dearly.

Edward (Tipper) is predeceased by his son Edward, Jr. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Jane; daughter Jean Hughes, son Thomas J. Hughes (Lisa), daughter Christine Hughes (Edward), 11 Grandchildren: Samantha, Scott, Nicole, Shannon, Kieran, Katie, Tommy, Cavan, Matthew, Jamie and Keith; daughter-in-law Bridget Hughes, Dear brother to Monica Kennedy, Stephen Hughes, James Hughes, Charles Hughes, John Hughes, and the late Thomas and Richard. Edward is survived by many nieces and nephews.
