Obituary for Emily Frances Setteducato

Emily Frances Setteducato passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 8, 2023, in a room overflowing with love and with family and friends at her side. Emily is a true inspiration to all who knew her. In true Emily-fashion, in her last weeks she selflessly showered her friends and family with love – lighting up whenever her life partner and “her rock”, Will, was nearby, making her family laugh with jokes and eyerolls, planning celebrations for her friends, and bragging about her new nephew to her many visitors. Every second of these “classic-Emily” moments will be cherished eternally. After graduating from Fair Lawn High School and William Paterson University, Emily began her calling as a preschool teacher. She was beloved by the communities at BJ Wilkerson Memorial Child Development Center and DA Quarles Early Childhood Center. Beyond work, Emily dedicated herself to making the lives of those around her better, including her friends that were like family and her cousins that were like friends. While Emily also loved to travel, visiting family and friends across the globe, the Jersey Shore was her home away from home. Emily is survived by her parents John and Maureen Setteducato (nee Newman), life partner William Doherty, sister Jacqueline Griffin, brother-in-law Stephen Hynes, nephew Liam Hynes, dog-nephews Porter and Oreo, and grandmother Mildred Setteducato. She is survived by many aunts, uncles, and cousins, all of whom she loved dearly. Emily is predeceased by her grandparents, Michael Setteducato, Frank Newman, and Emily Newman. While decades of more time with Emily was hoped for, the last year and a half of her life was gifted to the world by countless anonymous blood donors, platelet donors, and stem cell donors. If she could, Emily would urge anyone reading this to donate blood or platelets at your local blood bank and sign up to be someone’s match in the Marrow Transplant Registry. Correspondingly, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (lls.org) or Be The Match (bethematch.org).
