Obituary for Joan Mary Keenan

90+ years ago, God brought an Angel to earth and on Saturday March 18, 2023, he brought her back to heaven.

Joan Mary Keenan was born in Jersey City. She married Herbert F. Keenan on November 26, 1955, they lived in Jersey City for a few years, moved to Canton, Ohio for 3 years, then settled in Maywood NJ on October 31, 1965, where she lived the rest of her life. When Joan first saw her house in Maywood, she told us, she knew this was the house she was going to raise her children in, and later in life, die in and she got to do both.

Joan worked in NYC as a teenager, was a wonderful housewife and mother for several years and then once her kids were grown, worked at Sterns in Paramus and Sears in Maywood as a customer service rep until she retired.

Joan was very active with many organizations including the Maywood Seniors organization, in which she was an officer for many years, ran a post-stroke group, organized trips, speakers and entertainment for the senior group. She provided meals for various organizations that fed people in need and worked with the Harrison House that provided meals for families during Thanksgiving and Christmas. Until recently, Joan was very active with her church, Our Lady Queen of Peace in Maywood.

Joan loved the Jersey Shore, especially Long Beach Island and spent many summer vacations down the beach with her children and then later in life with her grandchildren. She loved to travel and was able to see many parts of the world during her life.

Joan loved spending time with her many friends, going out to lunch, playing cards on Fridays, going to the gym with her gym group 3 times a week or just talking on the phone and catching up. She loved to have parties at her house, having big events for July 4th and Christmas, where there would be 30 or more family and friends coming and going most of the day.

Joan is predeceased by her beloved Mother, Mary and beloved Father, Hugh, sisters, Virginia White, Rosemary Keen, her late husband, Herbert F. Keenan, as well as many close friends and family that she is now reunited with in heaven.

Joan Leaves behind her four children: Kevin Keenan, his wife Cheryl; Brian Keenan, his wife Christina; Gary Keenan; Colleen Esposito and her late husband, Robert “Jay” Esposito. Her four grandchildren whom she adored, and they adored her: Victoria Keenan, Dillon Keenan, Derek Keenan, and Gabrielle Esposito. Joan leaves behind many cousins and friends whom there are too many to name, but they all loved Joan and she loved them back. Many of her cousins and friends considered Joan a second mother.

Joan was loved by so many and will be missed by all. We know she is in a better place and we will always have wonderful memories and her love will last forever!
