Obituary for Thomas P. Gaughan

Thomas Gaughan passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 11, 2022. Thomas was a beloved brother, he leaves behind his brother - Chris Gaughan and his wife Abigail Gaughan and his Sister in Law Mary Gaughan. A Cherished husband, father to his eight children, and grandpa (poppy) to his fourteen wonderful blessings. Born in County Mayo Ireland, he was the second youngest of eleven children. Thomas bravely ventured to New York as a young man with dreams of entrepreneurship and raising a family. Throughout his life, Thomas explored New York City as an MTA bus driver and achieved his dream of becoming an entrepreneur, co-owning the Mayo Inn in the Bronx, New York for over 50 years.

If you asked a hundred people who Thomas Gaughan was, they would each give you a unique story. In his life, Tom wore many hats (literally and figuratively). He was a painter, gardener, roofer, bus driver, mover, actor, singer, and farmer. He was all those things and more, and most of all, to those he encountered, he was an incredible storyteller. Tom infused life and laughter into every occasion, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Thomas was the beloved husband to Bridget Gaughan, whom he shared a life with for 56 years. He was a devoted father to Thomas Gaughan and wife Arsema, Stephen Gaughan and wife Sue, Geraldine Graniero and husband Ron, Josephine Struz and husband Billy, Paul Gaughan, Mary Coughlin and husband Dan, Mark Gaughan, and John Gaughan. Further, he remains the cherished grandfather to Amanda and husband Eddie, Serena, Sean, Peyton, Brian, Kaylea, Rowena, Kevin, Vanessa, Peter, Daniel, Owen, Maura, and Liam.

After a long, fulfilling life, Tom’s family knows that he is at peace. And further suspect that he is talking St. Peter’s ear off, telling his tall tales over a cold beer at those pearly gates. Thomas was such a strong presence in this world and we know his memory will live on forever, he touched many lives with his stories, his selflessness and his boundless love for his family.
