Obituary for Ursula Joyce Ball (Bauer)

Ursula Joyce Ball, 95 passed away peacefully in her beloved home of 67 years in Fair Lawn. Born Ursula Bauer and known as Ushie, daughter of Franz and Lotte Bauer, she had a marvelous childhood in Dresden, Germany where her love of music, art,ice skating, the outdoors and especially singing developed. Forced to flee Dresden during the Holocaust, she and her parents emigrated to NYC after the war. She was forever grateful to the Joint Distribution Committee for assisting them with their emigration. She added her middle name Joyce when she discovered that no one in America could pronounce Ursula! She was introduced to Alfred Ball, also a German Jewish refugee, by a co-worker (his sister Ilsa Ball) and they married in 1952. Together they raised two children, Miriam and Elliott.

Ushie took great pleasure in being a stay at home Mom, caring for her family including her parents and husband's relatives, house and garden. She sang in local musical productions and later on joined several choirs. She had a subscription to the Metropolitan Opera House and her home constantly played WQXR in the background. When she re-joined the work force, she made good use of her bi-lingual skills and became a German -English translator for CPC, VW of America and later Mercedes-Benz. She and Alfred have over 30 photo albums of their travels around the world.

Ursula leaves behind daughter Miriam Fine, son Elliott Ball and his wife Diane; grandchildren Devorah Sissu, Naomi Fine, Yoel Fine (deceased),Ephraim Fine, Brian Ball, Dana Ball, Erinn Ball, Michael Colangelo, and Renee Colangelo; and great grandchildren Kerem, Tenne and Meisav Sissu, Ariel and Alon Fine. She also leaves behind her faithful 4 four-footed companion Oliver. Ushie has left us and joined her parents, husband, and grandson Yoel in the next world.

May her memory be a blessing to all.
